Oil Craze!

November 7, 2016

What is the deal with everyone using oil in their hair? Wait, people use hair serum as well? What is a hair serum? Should I use either in my hair?  What is the difference?

Are you using any sort of oil or serum in your hair?  Are you pondering these questions? Lets dive into the difference between the two.

Hair oils such as Morrocan Oil, Marula Oil and Scruples Renewal Hair Therapy Polish, to name a few, are for the purpose of hair care. These oils and  those similar, condition the hair by sealing the cuticle, they protect the hair from heat,  and provide high shine for a healthy look. In my salon I like to place a few drops in my hand after my styling aid and prior to blowdrying. I like to get it into the hair with heat for a silky look and feel. After the blowdry I then add a few drops to the finished style. Any time that I do this for a client they always ask me what was it that I put into their hair.

When I think of a hair serum I think of it as a styling aid, or stying product. Hair serums add a little shine and helps to eliminate frizz as well as block humidity. Serums can come in an oil or a cream form. Scruples has a hair serum in their White Tea line called Magical Serum that is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G on all hair types. It is light enough that it does not weigh baby fine hair down yet creamy enough to smooth out thick course hair.

So, should you use an oil or serum? I think that it is benificial to use oil if you hair could use a little TLC, you will not be disapointed with the results, as long as you do not overuse it, two to three drops should be just fine.  You can use a serum to prep your hair for any style and block humidty. Wheter you decide to use oil, serum or the combination of the two, your hair will love you for it.
